Rian had his first neurofeedback treatment today. I really liked the Dr, Justin, and felt he had a good understanding of Rian's symptoms and goals for treatment. Rian didn't have a headache today and was feeling pretty good. Justin asked us a few questions, explained the process and went over the symptom tracker that we will complete after every appointment. After talking for a bit, Justin sat Rian in front of a computer to watch a "game" which involved 3 boats racing on a river. His goal was to keep the middle boat in the lead. Basically, if the middle boat stayed in the lead, his brain waves were firing like they should. It was fascinating to watch the Dr.'s screen and Rian's screen as his brain tried to keep the middle boat in the lead. Eventually, after about 10 minutes, his brain got tired and couldn't keep the middle boat in the lead anymore. The Dr. said they would be working up to longer periods of time and the game would also become more difficult. This is how they train the beta waves to be where they're supposed to be. He also did a HEG treatment, where he watched the movie Groundhog Day while wearing a device on his head. If there was proper blood flow to the right part of the brain, the movie was bright and looked like it should. If not, the movie would go dark. I could see the struggle for Rian's brain to keep the movie on the screen. After the appointment, Rian was still headache free and is headache free this evening.
